Nature provide endless themes for Dutch artist Gerda van Leeuwen. Born and raised in the Netherlands her interest in painting was always there. With self-study and the inspiring guidance of other watercolour artists her dream became reality. With her eye for detail her work developed into a very special unique style in watercolour. Her use of different (watercolour) techniques in her paintings, in combination with Chinese ink, have been well received. As now Gerda is a representational watercolour artist whose style emphasizes the lush beauty of nature.
Subjects from nature; flowers, animals, people, to the turquoise ocean are her favourites. Gerda’s inspiration to paint evolves from the various emotional responses that she has to every day life. Her aim is to let the viewer make a connection with the richness of nature.
The way she uses the possibilities of watercolour and other mediums like gouache, acrylic and oil paint, she express the warmth of nature in it’s wide variouty. The simplicity and gracefulness of her subjects, supported by her keen use of colour en thin light lines, captures the ‘soul’ of the subjects.
Artist statement
Nature is the perfect subject for my desire to play with hues and shapes. They possess vivid and expansive colour schemes, wild, undulating contours, and they don’t need to be spelled correctly. I enjoy pushing the medium of watercolours through its range of delicate washes to rich, deeply layered glazes, urging the paper to its saturation point. With these paintings I have stepped beyond words and released unexpected inner images. They capture a deep and previously hidden layer of myself, one that gives form to my love of the natural world.
